Plan the support before planting
A climber may need a trellis, frame or other support that can carry its mature growth. Decide how it will attach and whether the structure can be maintained safely. Keep access to windows, drains, utilities and neighbouring spaces in mind.
Match the growth habit to the space
Some plants climb by twining, while others need tying or spread across the ground. Check expected growth and pruning needs before placing a plant near a wall or railing. A clear boundary helps prevent unwanted spread and keeps paths usable.
Consider sun, water and seasonal growth
Light and watering preferences differ between species. Balconies can be windier and hotter than garden beds, and monsoon growth may need extra pruning or support. Choose a plant for the actual exposure and decide how its growth will be managed through the year.
