Choose size and colour for the application
Pebbles used in a walkway need a different size and surface behaviour from a light decorative layer in a pot. Consider how they will feel underfoot, how easily they can be moved and how their colour will look beside nearby plants and materials.
Keep drainage and soil access in mind
A thick or compact layer can make it harder to inspect soil moisture and may affect water movement. Use a suitable depth and avoid blocking drainage outlets. For potted plants, make sure any decorative top dressing does not conceal standing water or prevent regular checks.
Plan edges and ongoing maintenance
Define the area with a stable edge so stones do not spread onto paths or lawn. Leaves and debris can collect between pebbles, so consider how the area will be cleaned. Pebbles work best when integrated with a practical layout and maintenance plan.
