Check drainage before choosing the pot
Some ceramic pots have drainage holes and others are designed as decorative cachepots. Plants that need drainage can be kept in a suitable inner nursery pot inside a decorative outer pot. Empty collected water so roots are not left standing in moisture.
Account for weight and placement
Ceramic can be heavy, especially when the planter contains soil and a mature plant. Decide where the pot will live and whether it needs to be moved for watering, cleaning or changing weather. On balconies and terraces, consider safe positioning and the load of the complete planter.
Pair finish with plant and setting
Shape, glaze and colour can complement foliage or flowers, but the planter should still suit the plant's size and care needs. Choose a stable base and leave room for growth. If the pot is exposed to outdoor conditions, ask how its finish and placement will hold up.
