Know the water depth and growing zone
Floating, marginal and submerged plants grow in different parts of a water feature. Measure the depth and identify planting shelves or containers before selecting a variety. Avoid adding a plant until its mature size and spread are understood.
Consider light and water conditions
Sunlight, water temperature and circulation influence plant health. A small container feature may heat up or lose water more quickly than a pond. Check the conditions through the day and account for seasonal rain and evaporation.
Keep the water feature manageable
Some aquatic plants can spread quickly and need regular thinning. Plan how you will remove excess growth and keep the feature clean. If fish or other aquatic life are present, check plant compatibility and avoid changing the ecosystem without suitable advice.
