Introduce light gradually
Many cacti appreciate bright conditions, but a plant moved suddenly from shade into intense sun can be damaged. Start with the light the specific species prefers and increase exposure gradually where needed. Indoor positions should still receive adequate natural light.
Use free-draining soil and containers
Cacti are vulnerable to roots staying wet for too long. Choose a growing medium intended for cacti and succulents and a container with drainage. Empty excess water from trays and take extra care during humid or rainy weather.
Make care and placement safe
Some cacti have sharp spines, so choose locations that are easy to reach for care but away from busy walkways and small children. Water according to the plant and season, allowing the medium to dry as appropriate before watering again.
